The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on Friday evening, November 17, 1911, by three Howard University undergraduate students with the assistance of their faculty advisor. The three liberal arts students were Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper and Frank Coleman, and the faculty advisor was world-renowned biologist Ernest E. Just. Omega Psi Phi was the first historically Black fraternity founded on a historically Black college or university. Omega's motto is "Friendship is Essential to the Soul," and her cardinal principles are Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift.

The Sixth District is one of thirteen Districts of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. It is comprised of graduate and undergraduate chapters located in North Carolina and South Carolina. Since the early 1980s, the Sixth District has sponsored over 4,500 boys from North Carolina and South Carolina to attend summer camp. The Brothers of Omega Psi Phi in the Sixth District endeavor to serve as mentors and role models to these young men. The results have been outstanding.

For a number of years, the Sixth District has pursued the goal of acquiring land and appurtenances suitable for operating its own boy's camp. The Sixth District has formed Carolina Uplift Foundation, Inc., which is a 501(c) (3) entity whose mission is to acquire or construct a boy's camp for the benefit of boys in North Carolina and South Carolina. The non-profit tax identification number for Carolina Uplift Foundation, Inc. is 56-0607629. Carolina Uplift Foundation, Inc. has already made significant strides to fulfill this mission.
